The Embodied Emotion Laboratory

Welcome to The Embodied Emotion Laboratory at the University of Winnipeg (Winnipeg, MB, Canada).  Our goal is to understand how brain-body interactions lead to the multitude of emotional behaviours we engage in every day.

Our Research

The goal of the Embodied Emotion Laboratory is to examine the neuroscience underlying emotional perception, emotional decision making, and emotion regulation.  Housed in the newly established Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Winnipeg, we use multiple neuroimaging methods to investigate topics ranging from emotion regulation in older adults to math anxiety in children.  Ongoing collaborations with computer scientists also allow us to develop machine-learning models to help us explain—and possibly predict—“why people do the things they do.”

Using machine learning to understand resting-state brain activity associated with ASMR

ASMR involves individuals experiencing tingling sensations and a sense of calm when they are presented with specific sensory triggers (e.g., whispering).  In this study, Research Associate Shyamal Dharia uses machine learning to investigate the neural dynamics of associated with ASMR, as measured with resting-state EEG.
